Gaining the support of nature's intelligence |
In the Vedic science of consciousness, war is said to begin in the collective consciousness of entire societies. Acute political, religious and ethnic tensions in the collective consciousness fuel violence and social conflictincluding crime, terrorism and war.
Field theory of consciousness: In the descriptions of Vedic science, groups of peace-creating experts defuse such society-wide stress and incoherenceby radiating an influence of harmony and orderliness through an underlying field of consciousness. Modern quantum physics has determined that all the fundamental components of the natural worldall the forces and subatomic "particles"are in fact nonmaterial waves traversing nonmaterial fields. Thus, to understand consciousness as a field, one need only assume that it operates like every other aspect of nature.
The Vedic Theory
In the Vedic science of consciousness as brought to light by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and validated by the latest quantum field theories, the field of consciousness is defined as one underlying and completely unified field of pure intelligence that is the source of the entire natural world an abstract, nonmaterial field of that can be directly contacted (and experienced) by the human mind.
Four components: This basic understanding expands into four componentsfour Vedic concepts that have been extensively validated by both scientific theory and experiment. Stated first in one sentence:
- A single unified field of intelligence at the basis of nature
- can be directly experienced by the human mind,
- producing rapid individual growth and
- a radiating influence of peace in society.
-
The unified field: The unified field: The Vedic tradition indicates that, as the ocean is the basis of all its diverse waves, so a single unified field of intelligence (or consciousness) lies at the basis of all diversity in the physical world. In recent decades, quantum physics has shown that, in fact, such a single unified field does existnon-material and omnipresent. As the source of all the laws of nature, this unified field of natural lawdefined in the latest superstring theoriescan be seen as the most fundamental level of the organizing intelligence of nature.
From the standpoint of peace creation, this unified field can be understood as a physical field of peace.
-
Transcendental Consciousness: In Vedic descriptions, the human mind can directly contact this unified field of nature’s intelligence. The connection to the unified field is said to take place during Transcendental Consciousnessa fourth major state of consciousnessdistinct from the three commonly experienced states of waking, sleeping and dreaming. In the last thirty years, scientists have identified such a fourth state of consciousness-characterized by deep physiological relaxation and increased brain wave coherence.
In this state of inner peace, the mind gains access to the limitless intelligence of nature.
-
Individual growth: When, in Transcendental Consciousness, the individual awareness opens itself to the unified field of nature's intelligence, the human mind and body are said to evolve rapidly toward higher levels of functioning. As watering the root of a tree nourishes every branch and leaf, so direct experience of the most fundamental level of nature’s intelligence enhances individual life in many ways.
Now hundreds of studies have documented such growthas measured by increased intelligence and creativity, improved health, and enhanced psychological maturity.
Anxiety is a psychological measure of an individual’s level of inner peaceor lack thereof. If Transcendental Consciousness is indeed a state of inner peace, regular experience of that state should reduce anxiety markedly. A statistical comparison (meta-analysis) conducted at Stanford University of all available studies (146 independent outcomes) indicated that, as compared with all other meditation and relaxation techniques tested to date, including the widely used technique of progressive muscle relaxation, Transcendental Consciousness (as experienced during the Transcendental Meditation® program) reduces anxiety at least twice as effectively. When the analysis was limited to only those studies with the most rigorous experimental design, the anxiety-reducing effectiveness of Transcendental Consciousness, as compared to other approaches, doubled yet again. Analysis showed that these positive results could not be attributed to subject expectation, experimenter bias, or research design.

Decreased Hospitalization and Doctor Visits through Transcendental Consciousness.
In addition to rapid improvement in psychological health, regular experience of Transcendental Consciousness also produces marked benefits for physical health. A five-year study of insurance statistics on 2,000 people throughout the U.S. who regularly practiced the Transcendental Meditation program found that their overall rate of hospitalization was 56% lower than the norm. The decreases were highly significant in the most serious conditions, including 76% less hospitalization for major surgery, 55% less for cancer, and 87% less for heart disease and stroke.
Reviewing these four studies on Transcendental Consciousness (which are backed up by hundreds of others), regular experience of this fourth state of consciousness produces rapid evolution toward higher levels of human functioningin terms of inner peace, mental abilities, psychological maturity, and physical health. The ancient Vedic descriptions of Transcendental Consciousness, and the profound growth brought by regular experience of that state, have both been thoroughly validated by modern science.

Peace in the world. Vedic science explains that a large group of people can together experience the inner peace of Transcendental Consciousness. This profound influence of peace then radiates into the entire society. Now 50 demonstration projects and 23 published studies have identified this radiating influence of peace, as measured by reduced crime, accidents, warfare, and terrorism.
In a deeply troubled world, the peace-creating effects of Transcendental Consciousness seem even more significant.

These four basic conceptsthe unified field, Transcendental Consciousness, individual growth, and the direct creation of peaceare now well-documented elements in a long-lost science of consciousness. Persuasive evidence indicates that modern science and ancient wisdom have joined hands in a theory and technology of peace.
